Are Some Simple Facts You Should Know About Septic
Tank Systems
|
|
|
A
septic system is an on-site sewage treatment and disposal system
buried in the ground. It consists of a septic tank, usually
made of concrete, and an absorption field or field line. This
is usually made of plastic chamber material or gravel.
After waste enters the septic tank, organic solid materials
float to the top and form a layer commonly known as sludge.
Bacteria in the septic system biologically convert this into
liquid. Inorganic materials and the byproducts of bacterial
digestion float to the bottom. This is called sludge.
A clear layer of liquid should be between the scum and sludge.
This clear liquid should overflow into the field lines or soil
absorption area.
Solid materials overflowing into the field lines will eventually
clog the field lines causing a backup and odor. To avoid this
problem, the septic tank should be pumped periodically to remove
the sludge.
A lack of bacteria in the tank can also cause solids to buildup
and cause an overflow into the field lines. Bleach, detergents,
toilet cleaners, and caustic drain cleaners all kill the bacteria
necessary for proper septic tank operation. Liquid bacteria
septic treatment can be purchased to add to your system to replace
the bacteria.
The most important thing to remember when you have a septic
system is to get it pumped. Periodic cleaning - once every two
to three years - is the best way to avoid costly repairs in
the future.
